Hussain Mohammad Ershad was born Feb. 1, 1930 in the area of Rangpur, northern Bangladesh is. In 1952, he was the reserve in the Pakistani army and in 1969 was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-commander. During the Bangladesh war for independence in 1971 Ershad was in Pakistan.
Later, Ershad went back to Bangladesh, where he became adjutant-general of the new army. In 1975 he became a Major General and was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army under Ziaur Rahman, who was then commander of the Army. Later, when Rahman was the head of the military administration and then as president in 1977, he proposed Ershad lead army headquarters.
. Ershad became popular, when supported by Abdus Sattar, acting president, and a new constitution in crisis days after the assassination of Ziaur Rahman in May 1981 . However, over time, after the elections in November 1981, Ershad distanced himself from President Sattar. The cause of disagreement was the role of the armed forces in the political life of Bangladesh.
