Biography Fulgencio BATISTA
Ruben Fulgencio Batista Zaldцґvar-and-was born January 16, 1901 in the town of Banes. In 1921, Ruben joined the army, risen to the rank of sergeant and gathered around him a large number of supporters. In September 1933 he organized the "sergeants rebellion" in which the interim regime was ousted Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, who had replaced the dictatorship of Machado. Thus, Batista became the most powerful man in Cuba.
Batista chose terror to strengthen its control over what is happening in the state through patronage. He received the support of the army and civilian forces, organized labor. First years of Batista led the state, "consulting" with the public, and thus was elected president in 1940. Enriching himself, he at the same time most effectively ruled Cuba, extending the system of educational institutions, supporting ambitious public works program, contributing to economic growth.
. After leaving the presidency in 1944, he traveled abroad for a long time he lived in Florida
. For eight years, during which he did not have the power, corruption has developed in Cuba, and reached national proportions. Batista once again came to power in a military coup in 1952, which was accepted with great enthusiasm in Cuba.
However, his return was quite unlike former presidency. Batista controlled the universities, the press, Congress has appropriated large sums from the state budget. July 26 1953 revolutionary forces led by Fidel Castro organized the attack on the Moncada barracks in g. Santiago de Cuba, which ended unsuccessfully. All participants were arrested and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. However, in 1955, under public pressure, Batista announced an amnesty for prisoners.
December 2, 1956 Castro organized a revolutionary-minded officers disembark in Cuba. From that moment the war against the Batista regime, Castro ended in victory on Jan. 1, 1959. Faced with the collapse of the Batista regime and his family fled to the Dominican Republic. Later he went into exile on the Portuguese island of Madeira, and then at Estoril, near Lisbon.
Batista died on August 6, 1973 in Marbella, Spain.
