Regulation with Pupienus Maxim in 238. Their rule was one of the last attempts of the Senate to take the army under his control. At the beginning of 238 Roman Senate supported proclaimed himself emperor in Africa (as opposed to Maximin) Gordian I and his son Gordian II. Simultaneously, the Senate elected the administrative council of twenty members, which included Balbinus and Pupienus, honored members of the Senate and prominent public figures (Balbinus was 60 years old, Pupienus - 74). But a month later, Gordian II was killed in battle, and his father committed suicide. Then Balbinus and Pupienus shared the supreme power among themselves, with Balbinus engaged in civil administration, and Pupienus assumed command of the army. Maximin was among those killed by his own soldiers. Unhappy with the rule of the Senate pretorians revolted and killed the two emperors. Their rule lasted for three months.
