Enrique Granados (Granados Enrique)

His music is based primarily on Spanish folk elements. Pantaleon Enrique Granados-and-Campino was born July 27, 1867 in Lleida (Catalonia). His father, a Cuban by birth, was an officer in the Spanish army, so the first piano lessons and music theory for the gifted child was given a military orchestra conductor. But soon the family moved to Barcelona, where Henry began serious training: for piano with F. Hurnetom and H. Pujol, the songs - with F. Pedrell. From 1887 to 1889 Granados lived in Paris, where he took lessons from Sh.de Berio.
Granados returned to Barcelona in 1890 a full-fledged composer and pianist. In 1900 he founded and headed a short-lived Barcelona Society of classical concerts, a year later he created in the same piano school - Academy of Music (later named after him), which remained a director until his death

In addition to original compositions, Granados left a lot of different kinds of arrangements, transcriptions, editions, exercises and even a textbook. Among other things, he occasionally turned to theatrical genres. Among these works - operas Madman (Follet, 1903) and Liliana (Liliana, 1911); after the premiere of the opera Maria del Carmen (Maria del Carmen, 1898) Granados was granted the Order of King Charles III. Later he became a knight of the Legion of Honor.

After the premiere of the piano version Goyesok in 1911, Granados began to compose long-planned opera based on the same material. Opera was scheduled for production in Paris in 1914, but this prevented the outbreak of the First World War, and instead of Paris premiere in New York on January 26, 1916. Two months later, the steamer 'Sussex', which Granados and his wife were returning home from the United States, was sunk in the British Channel by a German submarine.
