Biography CAMERON Julia Margaret (Cameron Julia Margaret)
(1815-1879)
Born in Calcutta, June 11, 1815. Started studying photography in 1863, settling in England on the island of Isle of Wight. Self mastered the complex process photos on wet collodion plates, common in the 1860's and 1870's, turning coal into the pantry for the lab, and a chicken coop in the studio. A year later, her first success was the picture of a little girl. Cameron used a shutter speed three to seven minutes, large plates and print a contact method on albumin paper. Many of its models, described how difficult it was to remain long in the absolute stillness. The best known are the portraits made by Cameron, Thomas Carlyle, Charles Darwin, John Herschel, Alfred Tennyson, Henry Longfellow, and her niece, Mrs. Duckworth (mother of Virginia Woolf) and Alice Liddell (the prototype of Alice in Wonderland). Among the works of Cameron are pictures depicting the heroes of the plays and poetry, in particular, at the request of Tennyson she did photo illustrations to his Royal idyll.
Cameron died in Kalutara (Ceylon) 26 January 1879.
