LIND, Robert Stoton (Lynd Robert Staughton)

(1892-1970)
Born September 26, 1892 in New Albany (pc. Indiana). He was educated at Princeton University, United Theological Seminary and Columbia University. In 1923 he was appointed head of the research program of small towns of the Institute of Social and Religious Research, in 1927 - Secretary of the Council for Social Research. Since 1931 - Professor of Sociology at Columbia University from 1960 - Professor Emeritus, retired. Major works by Linda written jointly with his wife, Helen Lynd: Medium City: Studies of Modern American Culture (Middletown: A Study in Contemporary American Culture, 1929) and transform the average city (Middletown in Transition, 1937). Lindh, sharply criticized supporters of quantitative (statistical) approach to sociological research in the book Knowledge for what? (Knowledge for What?, 1939). Lindh died in Warren (ea. Connecticut) 1 November 1970.
