Biography Marri, Robert (Murray Robert)
(ca. 1600-1673) Also known as Robert Maury (Moray), Murray studied at the University of St Andrews (town 20 km south-east of Dundee) and in France, was enlisted in the Scots Guards of Louis XIII. In 1643 he was knighted English King Charles I. During the civil war in England on behalf of Charles Murray led the negotiations between France and Scotland, in 1646 organized the King's escape from Newcastle. With the fall of the monarchy in England, resumed his career in France, and in 1654, after participating in the failed uprising, monarchists raised in Scotland, joined in Paris by Charles II. After the restoration of the monarchy returned to London and in 1663 became Lord of the Treasury for Scotland and Deputy Secretary of the Royal. Murray took an active part in founding the Royal Society in 1661, became its first president. Murray died in London on July 4, 1673.
