Biography Douglas Mawson (Mawson Douglas)
(1882-1958) Born in Shipley (Yorkshire), May 5, 1882. Educated at the University of Sydney (Australia). From 1905 he taught at Adelaide University, from 1920 to 1954 - Professor of Geology and Mineralogy of the University. In 1903 Mawson studied Islands New Hebrides. As part of the Antarctic expedition (1907-1909) Ernest Shackleton 16 January 1909 reached the South Magnetic Pole to Victoria Land. From 1911 to 1914 led the Australian-Asian Antarctic expedition, explore the land Wilkes (for which he was elevated to the dignity of knighthood), and in 1929-1931 - the British-Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition. Held mapping the coast of Antarctica. Was the editor and compiler of 22-volume report of the expedition. Widely known book Mawson There blizzard (Home of Vlizzard, 1915). Name Mawson named Australian research station, the Peninsula, Cape Verde, a mountain peak, glacier, coast, cliff, sea in the Antarctic. Mawson died in Adelaide on October 14, 1958.
