Quincy Porter (Porter Quincy)

(1897-1966)
Born in New Haven (pc. Connecticut), February 7, 1897. After completing his musical education at Yale University in 1921, continued studies in composition VD 'Andy and E. Bloch. In 1929, having received a two-year scholarship from the Guggenheim Foundation, Porter went to Paris, and on his return to America became a music professor at Vassar College. In 1938 he was appointed dean of the Conservatory of Music New England, in 1942 - its rector, from 1946 he taught at Yale University. Porter has devoted himself mainly to chamber genres, he wrote seven string quartets. Exemption from European influences is in his slow, but in the end the composer has achieved clarity and distinctness of his own writing style. Porter died in Bethany (pc. Connecticut) 12 November 1966.
