Asaph Hall (Hall Asaph)

(1829-1907)
Born October 15, 1829 in Goshen (pc. Connecticut). He studied at Norfolk Academy (pc. Connecticut), College Makgroville (pc. New York), worked at the observatory of the University of Michigan. In 1857-1862 was an assistant at Harvard Observatory in 1862 - an assistant in 1863-1891 - Professor of Mathematics, Naval Observatory in Washington,. In 1898-1903 he taught celestial mechanics at Harvard University.
Works include the Hall of observational astronomy. In 1876 he determined the rotation period of Saturn, subsequent to the opening of a white spot on the surface of the planet. During the confrontation of Mars in 1877 discovered the moons of Mars, later named Deimos and Phobos. Observed double star, in 1892 showed that the two components of the star 61 Cygni constitute a physical pair. Engaged in the development of the theory of motion of the planets and their satellites. Led several expeditions to observe total solar eclipses. Hall died in Annapolis (pc. Maryland) 22 November 1907.
