Hooft Pieter Corneliszoon (Hooft Pieter Corneliszoon)

(1581-1647)
Born March 16, 1581 in Amsterdam. In 16 years, was admitted to the 'camera rhetoricians' (shop-type society lovers of literature and theater), before which was presented his tragedy Achilles and Polyxena (Achilles en Polyxena). Then followed the tragedy of Theseus and Ariadne (Theseus en Ariadne, set in 1602), pastoral comedy Granida (Granida, post. 1605), Gerard van Felzen (Geeraerdt van Velzen, post. 1612), Traders (Warenar, post. 1614; explanations Pot Plautus) and Batho (Baeto, post. 1616). Although all four plays are written in foreign and ancient stories, by its nature is a product of purely Netherlands. In 1618, Hooft away from poetry and drama and turned to history, where his main achievement was the book of the history of the Netherlands (Nederlandsche Historien, 1642) that entered the golden fund of the Netherlands literature.
Died Hooft in The Hague, 21 May 1647.
