GEZIHY (Hesychios)

Gezihy; Hesychios, of Alexandria, V (or VI) in. n. e., Greek lexicographer. The creator of an encyclopedic dictionary (lexicon), as compiled by alphabetical. G. explained to him the rare words, the authors have found, especially among the Greek poets, as well as the expression of different Greek dialects. Lexicon G., preserved only in one instance, has undergone some changes (reduction and later insertions) relative to the original version. However, it is a valuable document for scholars of language, and provides substantial assistance in commenting on the texts of the Greek poets.
