Biography Tobias Lowitz Egorovich
Tobias Lowitz Egorovich (Johann Tobias) (25. IV. 1757 - 17. XII. 1804) - Russian chemist, academician of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (from 1793). Born in Gottingen. In 1768, together with his father arrived in Russia. Was a pupil in the main pharmacy in St. Petersburg (until 1780). He studied at the University of GцІttingen (1780-1782). In 1784-1797 again in the main pharmacy in St. Petersburg, where he completed the bulk of their research. From 1797 he worked in the home laboratory, while officially serving in the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences as a professor of chemistry.

Studies devoted to various problems of chemistry. He opened (1785) the phenomenon of adsorption in a liquid medium, studied in detail its. Discovers (1794) the phenomenon of supersaturation and supercooling of solutions; established conditions for growing crystals. Developed a number of recipes for cooling mixtures of. Opened (1789) method of producing acetic acid. For the first time received a crystal glucose (1792). Prepared (1796), anhydrous (ABS), diethyl ether and ethyl alcohol, the latter used for the separation of salts of barium, strontium and calcium.
