Balmaceda (Balmaceda), Josö? Manuel (circa 1840, Santiago - 19/9/1891, ibid), statesman, Chile. Since 1870 member of the National Congress. In 1878-81 Envoy to Argentina. In 1881-86, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Internal Affairs, 1886-91 President of Chile. Balmaceda opposed the expansion of foreign capital for economic development of Chile, for the democratization of the electoral system, a move which angered internal reaction, a rebellion. In January 1891 against the government of Balmaceda was made by Congress. After being defeated by the troops of Congress, Balmaceda committed suicide.
