Soviet athletes have not just scored a victory at the command of the Olympic piste. However, it laid the foundation of our racers and the results of cross-country men, tended to be more modest. In all the previous games, our athletes have won just one men's individual race. In Innsbruck-76 Soviet skiers-men won their first victory, with the final word in the dispute on the ski for debutantes said the Soviet team.
. The first Olympic start 27-year-old Sergei Saveliev brought him a gold medal at a distance of 30 km . He started the race in the middle of the 'caravan', and for our skiers were many athletes, is considered the favorite: Gerhard Grimmer of the team GDR, Norwegian Ivar Formo, Finn Arto Koivisto, a Swede, Sven-ц?ke Lundbek. Neither one of them failed to reduce the gap: Saveliev never tired to increase the speed and the result showed the best result.
Has developed dramatically for our team relay at the ski track. It started well: Eugene Belyaev successfully launched and led the race at the first stage. And suddenly, when three quarters of the way is left behind, fixing broken skis. With great difficulty dragged himself to the finish. Opponents far ahead. Lost more minutes.
Nicholas Bazhukov in the second stage performed a miracle: from 11 th place was able to move to the 3rd. But Sergei Saveliev, ill-sorted ointment for skiing, finished third stage of the sixth. Still, Ivan Garanin went out on 3rd place and 'brought' his team bronze medal. Gold awards went to Finnish skiers.
