Rabah Bitat born December 19, 1925 in the village of Ain al-Karma (fr. Ain El Karma) near the town Konstintiny in Algeria, which was in those years a colony of France. From a young age participated in the liberation movement. In 1940 he joined the Algerian People's Party (fr. Parti du Peuple Algerien, PPA), was a member of the Movement for the triumph of democratic freedoms, MTLD (fr. Mouvement pour le Triomphe des Libertes Democratique, MTLD) Messan Hajj. He was a clandestine armed group 'Special Organization' (OS), which in 1949 was headed by Ahmed Ben Bella. During the attack on the post office in the city of Oran was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison. . In May 1963 because of disagreements with President Ahmed Ben Bella, he was transferred to the post of Third Vice-President of the Council of Ministers, and in September 1963 left the government and the FLN Political Bureau. In 1964, Rabah Bitat moved from Algeria to France.

. After the overthrow of Ben Bella in a coup in June 19, 1965 created an army Revolutionary Council, headed by Colonel Houari Boumedienne began discussions with Rabah Bitatom and other former leaders of the FLN - Ferhat Abbas, . Krim Bensayh and Mohamed Boudiaf,
