SOVIET composer, conductor, teacher. People's Artist of the USSR - (1938). Student M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov, A. S. Arensky, D. E. Konyusa, C. I. Taneyev. Since 1908 acted as a conductor. In 1920-22 musical director of the Moscow section of the department of education, employee music department of the RSFSR People's Commissariat of millet. In 1938 the chairman of the Moscow Union of Composers, in 1939-48 - the Organizing Committee of the Union of Soviet Composers. In 1900-07, 1909-13 taught theoretical subjects in music school Gnesinyh. In 1902-03 gave private lessons in H. YA. Myaskovsky and C. S. Prokofiev. Since 1913 professor of composition class (since 1914 director) of Kiev, in 1920-41 - the Moscow Conservatory. In the 1924-30 chairman Vserosiyskogo society playwrights and composers. Among the disciples: B. N. Lyatoshynsky, L. N. Revutsky, B. A. Alexander,. G. Novikov, H. P. Rakov.
Gliere - continuing the traditions of Russian classical music. By first sovetskogo repertory ballet to modern revolutionary themes 'Red Poppy' (later 'Red Flower'), staged in many theaters, the ballet 'The Bronze Horseman'. In the symphonic works of
Gliere continued the line of the epic symphony. The most popular of his concertos for harp and orchestra (1938) and coloratura soprano and orchestra (1943). The author works for various instruments. Opera Glier played a big role in the development of musical culture of Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
