Born in Brno in 1929. He actively participated in the events of 1968 in Prague. In 1975 he emigrated to France.
He made his debut in the literature as a poet, firing in 50-ies of the book of poems "Man: Great Garden" (1953), "Last May" (1955) and "Monologues" (1957). In 1962 he published a play called Klyucharyov "in 1965 - a novel" Joke "; for 60-70-ies has issued a total of about a dozen books. World renown acquired after the publication in 1984 of the novel "The Unbearable Lightness of Being".
