(1772-1822) - Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. From the Ernestine line of Wettin dynasty. The eldest son of Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Charlotte Amalie, the daughter of George, Duke of Saxe-Meyningenskogo. In 1788-93 he. with his younger brother Frederick was educated at the University of Geneva.
In 1797, Mr.. joined his first marriage to Louise-Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, . and when she died in 1801, . leaving him only daughter Louise, . - Which later becomes the mother of Albert, . Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, . Prince Consort of Great Britain .., . - Married a second time (in 1802) at Carolina Amalie, . daughter of William IX, . Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, . From unedited noteworthy idyllic fantasy "Panedone". In May 1822, Mr.. was succeeded by his brother Frederick IV (1822-25 gg.), the last male descendant of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg branch.
