In 1819, Santander was chief Patriotic Army. Participated along with Simon Bolivar in the Battle of Boyaca and the release of Bogota (1819). In 1819-28, Vice-President of Gran Colombia, during the military campaigns of Bolivar de facto President. In September 1828 charged with conspiracy against Bolivar, and was sentenced to death, which was replaced by the expulsion of their country.
