Biography Arnulf (Arnulf)
(ca. 850-899) Known as Arnulfo Carinthia, illegitimate son of King of Bavaria and Italy, Carloman, the eldest son of Louis II the German. After the death of his father in 880 Arnulf inherited Carinthia, and in 887 Charles III of Tolstoy forced to abdicate and was elected king of Germany's (ie. Eastern Frankish King). In 891 Arnulf defeated the Normans in Leuven, and led the campaign against 892-893 for full independence Svyatopolk, Prince of Great Moravia, and Rudolph of Burgundy. In 894 Arnulf at the request of Pope Formosa moved to Italy and opened hostilities against Guido of Spoleto, which had threatened the pope and challenged by Arnulf power over Italy. After sustaining heavy losses, Arnulf was forced to retreat, but next year he returned and took Rome, where 896 Formosa crowned him as emperor. Begun during the march to the south of Italy serious illness forced Arnulf to return to Germany. Aching for three years, he died in Regensburg on December 8 899. Arnulf's successor was a young child, Louis, his legitimate son and the last representative of the Carolingian dynasty in Germany.
