Biography BALDOMIR Alfredo (Baldomir Alfredo)
(1884-1948) Born in Montevideo on August 27, 1884. He studied at the Uruguayan military academy and at the architectural department of the National University. Participated in the civil war of 1903-1904, was dismissed from the army. He studied architecture and military engineering, recovered in the military service in the design office, which led in 1931. In 1917-1919 he served in the General Staff in 1925-1931 was an engineer instructor, in 1934 headed the police service Montevideo and in 1935 became Minister of Defense. As president (1938-1942) Baldomir appeared zealous advocate of unification of South American States in the fight against fascism and the beginning of World War II, made great efforts to ensure the safety of Uruguay. On his initiative, Uruguay broke off diplomatic relations with the Axis and contributed its naval base U.S.. Baldomir died in Montevideo on Feb. 25, 1948.
