After the assassination of Elagabalus (222), a young Alexander, who was entirely at the mercy of his mother Julia Mamei, was proclaimed Emperor. Julia enjoyed unlimited influence on the emperor throughout his reign. An important role was played by an imperial council, prefect of Pretoria (head of administration) was a famous jurist Ulpian, who, incidentally, killed the mutinous Praetorians 223. In the 231-232 North Alexander marched against the Persian king Ardashir I, and Mesopotamia at the time managed to return under the authority of Rome. The emperor and his mother were killed by mutinous troops in Germany. Riots broke out because of attempts to buy peace at the Alamanni, against whom Alexander had made a campaign. The new army proclaimed emperor Maximian.
