Biography Dag HAMMARSKJö?LD (Hammarskjld Dag)
(1905-1961) The son of Hjalmar Hammarskjö²ld, Prime Minister of Sweden. Born July 29, 1905 in Jö²nkö²ping. He graduated from Uppsala University in 1925. He studied and taught at the University of Stockholm. In 1941-1948 - Chairman of the National Bank of Sweden, . while the Deputy State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance (1936-1945), . Ambassador at Large and financial adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1947-1948), . Head of the Swedish delegation at the Paris Conference of the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (1948), . Head of the Swedish delegation to the UN General Assembly (1952-1953). April 10, 1953 Hammarskjold succeeded Trygve Lie as Secretary General of UN. In 1957 his term of office was extended for another 5 years. Hammarskjold was a champion of 'diplomacy of appeasement'. During the Suez Crisis of 1956, together with L. Pearson, organized and sent to Egypt UN peacekeeping troops. In 1958 the UN to establish a presence in Lebanon and Jordan.
The next time Hammarskjold sent UN troops in Congo in 1960, where a few days after the declaration of independence revolt. Hammarskjold was killed in a plane crash near Ndola in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), September 18, 1961, heading for a conference to resolve the Congo crisis. October 23, 1961 Hammarskjö²ld was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 1961 (posthumously).
