Biography Freire, Gilberto de Mello (Freyre Gilberto de Mello)
(1900-1987) Born March 15, 1900 in Recife. Secondary education received at home and in the American College Gilrita in Recife. He studied in the United States, received his BA from Baylor University and a master's degree at Columbia University (1923). He received international acclaim as the author of a big house and servants quarters (Casa grande e senzala, 1933). In 1946 he joined the committee for a new Brazilian constitution, was elected to the lower house of Congress. He represented Brazil at the UN General Assembly in 1949.
