Biography SHAMPEN Philippe de (Champagne Philippe de)
(1602-1674) Born in Brussels on May 26, 1602. From 1621 he worked in Paris. Studied under Nicolas Duchesne, subsequently married his daughter and succeeded him in the decoration of the Medici Gallery in the Luxembourg Palace. Shampenya result of contacts with the royal court was the famous painting The Oath of Louis XIII (Caen), and several portraits of Cardinal Richelieu, the most famous of which is in the Louvre. An objective and perceptive portraitist, who wrote the court and the top of the third estate, Shampen in the last years of his life approached the Jansenists of Port-Royal monastery. Their portraits - the most interesting for the modern audience of Shampenya. Excellent example of clear, strong interpretation of images is a picture of two nuns (1662, Paris, Louvre), which was a characteristic Shampenya gray scale. This painting was painted on the vow, for the sake of healing the daughter of the artist, who was also a member of the community yansenistskoy. Shampen died in Paris on August 12, 1674.
