Biography SCHUMANN Robert (Schuman Robert)
(1886-1963) Born June 29, 1886 in g.Lyuksemburge. Schumann's political career began in 1919, when he was elected a deputy from the department of Moselle in the French National Assembly. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1940, escaped in 1942 and participated in the resistance movement. After the Second World War, Schumann was involved in the organization of the People's Republican Party. In 1946-1947, as finance minister in the governments J. Bidault and P. Ramadier tried to curb inflation. Served as prime minister from November 1947 to July 1948 and in August-September 1948 - during the period of escalating economic difficulties. In 1948-1952 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs, 1955-1956 - Minister of Justice from 1958 to 1960 - Chairman of the Consultative Assembly of the European Council. Schumann died at Metz on Sept. 4, 1963
