Biography STEWART Balfour
STEWART Balfour (1.XI 1828 - 19.XII 1887) - Scottish physicist, member of the Royal Society of London (1862). Born in Edinburgh. He graduated from the University of St Andrews and Edinburgh. In 1856 - 1858 - Lecturer, University of Edinburgh, in 1859 - 1871 - Director of Kew Observatory, 1870 - 1887 - Professor, University of Manchester.
Work in the field of spectral analysis, thermal radiation, meteorology. Studied the relationship between the emission and absorption and absorption of thermal radiation from the bodies. Experimentally determined (1858), that the absorption capacity of the body is equal to its ability lucheispuskatelnoy (for any kind of thermal radiation).
