Born on March 22 (April 4, NS) in Riga in the family of Lieutenant.
During the First World War, my father was at the front, his mother went with him as a nurse, taking with him his son. Throughout the war he was accompanied on the front of parents.
After the war he studied at Kursk, where the "Kursk truth" was published his first story, then - essays, satires and "every newspaper trifle". The author was 16 years old.
In his youth he lived in the town of Dmitrov, directed drama. Here, wrote his first novel, "Raphael of the barbershop," later published in Moscow. Feeling the need for professional education, went to Leningrad and entered the College for the Performing Arts, which produces leaders initiative. But he did not like the program: taught dancing, speech technology, fencing. Left, began working at a metal factory laborer, in his spare time he wrote, published in the journal "Young Proletarian", then worked in the newspaper paper mill. It met with German specialists who have arrived in the USSR. Idea arose to write a novel about. In 1931 his novel "Introduction", positively evaluated Gorky. Then there was the novel "Poor Henry" (1934).
Becoming a professional writer, gave all his time to literary work. In 1934 - 36 wrote the novel "Our friends", then - the story "Lapshin and Alexei Zhmakin" (1937 - 38), treated later in the novel "One Year" (1960). During the Great Patriotic War he served in the Northern Fleet military correspondent for Tass and Soviet Information Bureau, many published in newspapers. In the postwar years, wrote screenplays "Pirogov", "Rumyantsev Case", "Belinsky", "My dear man,". He worked on his novel "Young Russia", released in 1952. In 1956 his novel "The lieutenant colonel of medical service" in 1957 - "It's who you serve". January 16, 1967 Y. Herman died.
