Biography Bruno WALTER (Walter)
Walter, Bruno (Walter), (1876-1962), German conductor. Born September 15, 1876 in Berlin. In his younger years was strongly influenced by the composer Gustav Mahler. In 1913-22, Walter was musical director of the State Opera in Munich. In 1936-38 he was principal conductor of the Vienna Opera and Symphony Orchestra. In 1938, Walter emigrated to France, and in 1940 moved to the U.S.. In 1947-49 headed the New York Symphony Orchestra, where he won worldwide recognition performance of works by Mozart and Mahler. Walter died 17 February 1962 in California.
