The Philippine Supreme court has postponed a decision on the burial of Marcos
The Philippine Supreme court postponed a decision on whether to bury the former dictator Ferdinand Marcos as a hero.
The decision was supposed to come out this week, but the Supreme court said Tuesday that it will be extended until 8 November. Marcos died in exile in 1989. In 2015 his body was put in his family stronghold in the North-West of the Philippines.
In August, President Rodrigo Duterte announced plans to bury the remains of Marcos at the national heroes cemetery in Manila, which caused outrage among victims of the Marcos regime and civil society groups. On Sunday Duterte expressed hope that the court decides "not on emotions", and "public interest" and promised to abide by the ruling.
"We hope that the court will see it our way," said the EAC, Olalia, President of the National Union of lawyers, which filed a case of their disagreement with the burial. "The court should confirm the historical reality that Marcos, a fascist dictator, and a burglar's advantage, not the hero.
More than 30 thousand people have signed a petition objecting to the re-internment of thousands in protest against the decision in favor of burial. Marcos fled after the revolution in 1986 and ended his decades as dictator. Many young Filipinos do not know Markos, but at the last godiego family once again appears on the political stage.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. lost the election to the post of Vice President of the Philippines this year, only 0.64%. The widow of the late dictator, Imelda Marcos, was elected four times to the House of representatives, despite the ongoing controversy over the huge sums of money that she and her husband looted the country.
