Duran Duran are set to record an unofficial World Cup song
The group - made up of Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Roger Taylor - have approached the team`s captain, Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, to team up with them on a new version of their hit `Rio`.
A source said: "Simon and Rio are old mates. Rio got Simon and the band along to a behind-closed-doors session at the Man United training ground to see the lads go through their paces and even introduced them to manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
"No one`s released a serious World Cup song this year and Duran Duran, with millions of fans, would be guaranteed a hit if they stepped up to the plate."
Super-producer Mark Ronson is also said to be keen to work on the track, to give it a more up-to-date feel.
The source added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Mark Ronson has been in touch and would be up for remastering it, as has Nick Hodgson from the Kaiser Chiefs. Rio fancies himself as a singer. It?d be fantastic if they can find the time to get into the studio."
The English FA have decided not to have an official song this year - the first time since 1966 - but fans are demanding a track.
Other stars to have recorded tracks for the England squad include New Order, Baddiel and Skinner and the Lightning Seeds and Embrace.
