Elizabeth Taylor portrait sells for millions
An Andy Warhol portrait of Dame Elizabeth Taylor sold for £6.7 million at an auction in London yesterday.
The iconic artwork, titled Silver Liz, was created in 1963 and was one of a series of paintings the artist did of the Hollywood screen legend while she was recovering from an illness. The piece had expected to fetch between £6 million and £8 million at the Post-War and Contemporary Evening auction held at Christie`s in the UK. It was purchased by an anonymous bidder for £6,761,250 including the buyer`s premium.
Taylor was one of Warhol`s muses during his prolific career, with him openly praising her for being "so glamorous".
The portrait is believed to be one of only two pictures created by Warhol that famously depicted the actress with violet eyes.
The artwork had been in a private collection previously and wasn`t seen in public for more than 20 years before it went on display at Christie`s earlier this month.
