Basement of 7-th World Wonder found
French underwater archeologists found basement of Faros lighthouse in Alexandria - the 7-th Wonder of the World.
As general director of Alexandrian national museum Ibragim Dervish announced on Sunday, destroyed by 2 earthquakes (in XI and XIV centuries) lighthouse occupied area of 800 square meters north from Eastern bay.
Faros lighthouse consisted of 3 placed one on another towers and reached 120 or 137 meters in height. It was toped with bronze cup containing punky charcoal. There a complicated system of mirrors, which allowed strangers to see light of punky charcoal from distance of tens kilometers, was situated.
Earthquake scattered stone blocks of lighthouse over bay and only now archeologists determined its location. Governor of Alexandria Salam Makhgub appealed to Egyptian and international organizations to reconstruct lighthouse; $100 millions will be needed for that purpose.
