Georgian police captured Russian military base
Georgian military police captured objects of Russian military base at Gonio training ground in Batumi suburbs. This was informed by commander of Russian troops in Transcaucasia, major-general Andrei Popov. By his words, capture was carried out by 25 armed military policemen of Batumi garrison.
"Gonio training ground is in mutual use of Russian and Georgian servicemen, but interest of armed unit was demonstrated only to Russian objects", - announced Popov. He added that leader of armed policemen, lieutenant colonel of Georgian army Gocha Ninidze appealed to some order.
Popov informed that incident took place on Friday at 22:00. The conflict has been settled after intervention of command of Russian troops in Transcaucasia and Russian Embassy in Georgia. By words of Popov, Georgian policemen left the base at 0:40 a.m.
"Any illegal actions towards Russian military objects on territory of Georgia will be resolutely suppressed", - announced Popov.
Popov reminded that withdrawing of Russian military bases from territory of Georgia started last year. He insists that Russia meets engagements on terms and objects of withdrawal.
On January 17 Russian minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov announced: "Russian side impeccably followed agreements of armed units` withdrawal from territory of Georgia in 2005. We will observe all agreements in 2006 and 2007".
