European Council appeals to repeal death penalty in Russia
General Secretary of European Council Terry Davis hopes that Russia will ratify the 6th protocol (about prohibition of death penalty) to European convention of human rights` protection.
"I would like to remind that Russia entering European Council in 1996 gave obligations to forbid death penalty. I hope that Russia will keep its promises soon"- said Davis.
Answering the question about applications of sanctions to Russia by European Council (CE) and its Parliament Assembly side in case this document would not be ratified till the end of current year, interlocutor answered:"I don?t know about those sanctions".
Touching up-coming in May 2006 chairmanship of Russia in Committee of CE ministers, David expressed his opinion that chairman country has influential position.
"But the word "influence" is not appropriate. I am absolutely sure that Mr. Lavrov (minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov) will act accurately to avoid an impression that Russia dictates CE what to do in different situations".
Davis thinks that "talent of persuasion which is Lavrov`s quality will not be used for pressuring on working CE structures".
