Saltykov-Shchedrin, Mikhail Evgrafovich

Born in the village of Spas-angle in the province of Tver (now there is a house museum). He studied first in Moscow, then in the Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum, which he graduated in 1844. At the end of the Lyceum served in the War Department. The first piece - a poem "Lira" - published in 1841. For a satirical story "confusing", was arrested and exiled to Vyatka. After his exile he returned to St. Petersburg in 1868-1884, he led the magazine "Notes of the Fatherland" (until 1878 - in conjunction with H. A. Nekrasov). The main product of Saltykov considered novel "Golovlevs" (1875-1880).
He wrote under the pseudonym N. Shchedrin, hence his double-barreled name, which now is already perceived as real.
