Biography Corbett, James
The first world champion in boxing gloves became a 26-year-old American, James Corbett (Gentleman Jim) (1866-1933). In the twenty-first round, he knocked out John Sullivan. And this was not surprising: Corbett was 8 years younger than the champion and much better prepared. Corbett introduced many new techniques in training boxers: invented and applied a "pear", introduced jumping rope, was used to prepare for battle other sports, particularly athletics. He was the first supporter of the hard regime, strongly opposed the use of athletes, alcohol and tobacco, without which at that time treated a rare boxer. Fight with Sullivan held on Sept. 7, 1892 in New Orleans in gloves, which weighed 5 ounces. To interested parties and ignite passion in the stands, was appointed a tempting prize - 25 thousand dollars. Having won the world championship, James Corbett, carefully guarded his title, avoiding risky matches. Only 17 March 1897 he was defeated (he was knocked out in the fourteenth round) in a battle with Robert Fitzsimmons, who was admitted to the meeting only after it received U.S. citizenship. This was the first fight, filmed on film. Another double D. Corbett tried to regain the title in fights with D. Jeffreys, and both times unsuccessfully. 11/05/1900, the Jeffries knocked him out in the 23 round, and after 3 years 14.08.1903g. in the 10th round. After the battle, James left the box.
