Born May 24, 1940 in Leningrad.
Up to 15 years in high school, then worked, had many professions. Write poetry in his own testimony, began at age 16. His pen belonged to such popular poems as "Christmas Romance", "Stanzas," "Sonnet," "Hills".
The official literature it rejected, without giving opportunity to publish. He lived only random orders for verse translations.
In 1963 he was arrested, tried and sentenced to five years of exile in the Arkhangelsk region with an obligation to work on the decree "On the responsibility for parasitism". In exile Joseph Brodsky continues to write: "The noise of rain ..."," Song "," Winter-mail, "" A poet "written in these years. In 1965, thanks to the intercession of Akhmatova, Samuil Marshak, Shostakovich and other artists, as well as the pressure of world public opinion lag has been reduced to actually served (1 year 5 months) and Brodsky was allowed to return to Leningrad.

. His collection of essays, "Less than one" was in 1986, recognized as the best book of literary criticism in the U.S..
In 1987 he became a Nobel laureate in literature.
In 1992 - the poet laureate of the U.S..
Joseph Brodsky died of heart disease on Jan. 28, 1996 in New York. He was buried in Venice on the cemetery of San Michele.
