Jose de San Martin (Jose de San Martцґn)

1778 - 1850
born February 25, 1778 in the town Yapeui, in what is now Argentina. His parents were Spaniards. Father Jose, Juan de San Martin, was a professional soldier. When Josц? was six years old, his family moved to Spain, where in 1785 Jose was in seminary in Madrid. In 1789 he quit the seminary and joined the Cadets, having begun his brilliant military career.
Over the next 20 years, de San Martin served in the Spanish army and participated in the wars against the Dutch (1791) and Britain (1798). During the latter, he was taken prisoner by the British and spent more than a year. 1804 he received the rank of captain.
During the occupation forces of Spain by Napoleon de San Martin distinguished himself as a brilliant military leader and fighter for freedom of the country and rose to the rank of lieutenant-commander Army.
1812 Jose de San Martin was assigned to Lima to organize the protection of the colonial government of the revolutionary forces of insurgent Argentina. However, a native of Argentina de San Martin was unable to turn his troops against the revolutionaries, but, instead, sided with the rebel provinces.
As head of the Andean Army rebels, Jose de San Martin liberated from the Spanish colonial territory of modern Argentina, Chile and Peru. In 1821-22, he led the Government of the Republic of Peru.
