Biography Aristarchus of Samos
(flowering of activity - the first half 3 in. BC) Aristarchus, as is commonly believed, first put forward the hypothesis that the Sun is motionless in the center of the universe and the Earth turns around and spins around its axis. This landed him in charge of neblagochestii by the poet and philosopher Cleanthes, and he was forced to flee from Athens. The only extant composition Aristarchus - a treatise on the size of the Sun and the Moon, and distances to them, with commentary Poppa Alexandria. It outlines the geometric method for estimating the relative distances to the Sun and the Moon, but because of the primitive tools used by Aristarchus, his findings are far from the actual. In this treatise Aristarchus believes the traditional concept of geocentric structure of the world, but in Archimedes' treatise on the calculus of sand, and in Plutarch's treatise On the face of the disk of the moon there mention of his heliocentric views.
