Papp; Pappos, of Alexandria, some III in. n. e., Greek mathematician. The main product of P. become the Body (Synagoge) in 8 books. Of these, the first and second partially lost, and the book. 7 and 8 give the impression of unfinished. Code originally formed from 8 separate mathematical treatises. P. summarizes the work of their predecessors, along with explanations and own additions, often substantial and original. Product P. is an invaluable source of study of the lost works of Greek mathematicians, among whom Apollonius of Perga, Archimedes, Aristarchus of Samos, Eratosthenes, Heron of Alexandria, Hipparchus of Nicea, Conon of Samos, Claudius Ptolemy.
