(1627-1691) Born January 25, 1627 at Castle Lismore (County Waterford, Ireland). In 1635 at the age of 8 years went to Eton. Engaged in research in natural sciences, focusing at the same time religious and philosophical questions. In 1654 he moved to Oxford, where a laboratory and with the help of specially invited assistants conducted experiments in physics and chemistry. One of these assistants was R. Hook. In 1660 Boyle improved air pump Guericke, made with the help of a number of experiments: showing the elasticity of air, determined its specific gravity, etc.. In 1662 discovered the law of volume change of air pressure change, which is independent of it established in 1676 E. Marriott (Boyle's law - Mariotte). In 1668 Boyle received an honorary doctor of physics, University of Oxford, in the same year he moved to London. In 1673 published the results of experiments on roasting metals in sealed containers that are incorrectly attributed the absorption of 'corpuscles' light metals. Correct interpretation of these experiments were a century later in the writings of Lavoisier. Among other works of Boyle - the study of elasticity of solids, the behavior of water in the freezing, hydrostatic effects. In 1663 he opened the colored rings in thin layers, called later Newton.
