Biography GETTON James (Hutton James)
(1726-1797) Born in Edinburgh on June 3, 1726. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Paris and Leiden. In 1749 received his doctorate in medicine. In 1750 he returned to Scotland. Receiving the inheritance, he settled in 1754 in Beruikshire and began the introduction of new farming techniques. In 1768 settled in Edinburgh. Getton began to study the structure of the Earth even during his stay abroad. His theory of the origin of magmatic crust, based on the idea of 'underground heat', was presented at a meeting of the Royal Society in 1785 in the report 'Theory of the Earth', which is an expanded and updated form, was published in 1795.
