Biography DOW Gerard (Dou Gerard)
(1613-1675), born April 7, 1613 in Leiden. In 1628-1631 he studied Rembrandt. For early works of Dow, created under the influence of Rembrandt, is characterized by a thin cut-off Modeling and free open brushwork. In his later paintings of picturesque texture becomes smooth, smear hidden, is dominated by cold, silvery-gray. The artist has achieved fame during his lifetime, leading the Leyden school genre painter. Dow died in Leiden on Feb. 9, 1675.
