Biography George Mercer DAWSON (Dawson George Mercer)
(1849-1901) Born Aug. 1, 1849 at Pictet (Nova Scotia). In 1869-1872 he studied at McGill University and the Royal School of Mines in London. Since 1883 Assistant Director, from 1895 until the end of life - Director of Geological Survey of Canada. Expedition leader in the pool r.Yukon. Elected member of the Royal Society in London (1891) and president of the Royal Society of Canada (1893). Dawson made a significant contribution to the geological mapping of Canada. Dawson named in honor of center of gold mining. Dawson died in Ottawa on March 2, 1901.
