Clarendon, Edward Hyde (Clarendon Edward Hyde)

(1609-1674)
Born in Dintone (near Salisbury, Wiltshire) February 18, 1609. He was educated at Oxford. He studied law in the 'Middle Temple' and was admitted to the Bar in 1633.
Clarendon met in the short and in the Long Parliament (1640). As a member of the opposition supported the prosecution of Count Strafforda (but was opposed to his execution), spoke out against attacks on the Church of England. In January 1642 Clarendon left the ranks of the opposition and went over to the king, joined his court in York in May 1642.

During the revolution of Clarendon was one of the most trusted advisers to the king, and in 1645 became one of the guardians and mentors Prince of Wales (later Charles II). Was an uncompromising enemy of the Queen Mother, Henrietta Maria. In 1649, Clarendon left the English court in exile, to represent its interests in Spain. However, in 1651 again joined the Prince in Paris, and until the Restoration in 1660 remained his chief adviser. In 1660 assumed the post of Lord Chancellor of England, which was appointed in 1658 more. In 1661 he was granted the title Earl of Clarendon. In November, Clarendon left England to spend the rest of his life in exile in France - in Montpellier, Moulins and Rouen.

His work history of rebellion and civil wars in England (History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England) of Clarendon, began in the period between 1646 and 1648, and revised and completed his exile, after 1671. In 1660 the daughter of Clarendon Anne Hyde married James, Duke of York, but died in 1671. Daughter of James II from Anna, Maria and Anna, became queen of England.

Clarendon died in Rouen (France) 9 December 1674.
