. In her opinion, the writer can not be free from a world in which he lives, and, in addition to artistic skills, should have the understanding of 'social and political' realities (the book essays The Poet in the Modern World - The Poet in the World, 1973)
.
Born October 24, 1923 in England (Illford, Essex). Her father, a Russian Jew, was an Anglican priest. Education was at home, except for ballet lessons and French language. During the Second World War was a nurse. The first book of poems Double image (The Double Image) published in 1946. In the U.S. Levert moved in 1948 when she married the writer M. Goodman. In 1961 and 1963-1965 led Department of poetry in the magazine 'Nation'. In 1965 was one of the initiators of the protest movement of writers and artists against the war in Vietnam.

Best poems Levert encourage readers to experience described a moment and ponder its meaning, paying particular attention to 'irrelevant' sides of life around.
