Biography FOX Johann (Lys Johann)
(ca. 1595-1629) Born c.. 1595 in Oldenburg (Germany). It is known that he was in 1620 in Rome and in 1621 in Venice. In Rome, he was strongly influenced by Caravaggio's paintings that can be seen in his picture Lute (Dresden Art Gallery). However, later, under the influence of the Venetians contrast of light and shadow gave way to a bright color and free songs. For works of the artist's mature period is characterized by rich colors and an abundance of light reflexes, an example can serve as a picture of Temptation of St.. Jerome (Venice, Church of San Nicolo di Tolentino). Fox also wrote genre scenes, such as peasants, playing in the Moru (Kassel, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen). Fox died of the plague in Venice in 1629.
