Biography William McMahon (McMahon William)
(1908-1988) Born in Sydney, February 23, 1908. He was educated at St. Paul College, University of Sydney, practiced law. During the Second World War he served in the Australian Army. In 1949 he was elected to Parliament from the Liberal Party. Contributed to the development of national oil and mining industries and the expansion of trade ties with Japan. In 1966 he was elected deputy party leader, was promoted to the federal Treasurer. In 1969 was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 1971 the Liberals chose McMahon as their leader, and he led the government. Dzh.Gortona replaced as leader of the Liberal Party and as prime minister of a coalition government of the Liberal and Agrarian parties. At the prime minister has worked closely with U.S. foreign policy and contributed to the expansion of foreign trade. In 1972 the Liberals were defeated by the Labor Party, and McMahon resigned from his post as Prime Minister. He was elevated to a knighthood in 1977.
Died McMahon in Sydney March 31, 1988.
